Getting Fit

I ran in my second 5K last weekend.

It was supposed to be back in April, but I was traveling and it wound up being rained out. So they rescheduled it for this month.

I got up early Saturday, and really didn’t want to go. I’ve been fighting allergies for a few months, and it’s been giving me some fatigue. I was also in a funk and didn’t want to be around people. It’s a long story why, but it’s been a thing the last few months. Still, I got my ass out of bed, suited up, got the dogs fed and hit the road to be there by 7:30 am. Racetime was at 8.

They moved the event from the original venue to Epic Central in Grand Prairie, which was sweet for me since it was closer and easier to get to. It turned out to be a nice day, a cool morning, about the perfect temp.

The path started out around the lake:

Super nice run. I didn’t clock in a bad time for me, average 13 min mile or so. I don’t bust my ass on these things. It’s more social for me. I did have a few friends my age that were going for broke though. I met one who was on his way back to the finish line after the turnaround point. Red, sweating, limping a bit, huffing and puffing, he looked like the grim reaper was chasing him down. He lived though, with a 9 min mile average. Keep in mind, most of us are in our sixties.

Nothing pulls me out of a funk better than running or biking, really. After the run, a bunch of us hit a coffee shop and hung out a bit. It was a super nice morning that really lifted my spirits.

Somethings been going on with my carcass. I hit some sort of stride where flubber is vanishing and muscle mass is building. My core is way stronger and I’m adding mass to my arms, shoulders, chest, and thighs. Maybe the kettle bell exercises? My supplements started working? Who knows. I had a great workout Monday, today’s may be as good. I’m at the point where I need to add weight to my reps. Whatever it is, I’ll take it.

  1. Well done. I’m a tad envious. Not that I ever was a runner… but at this point the knees absolutely would require replacement were I to attempt a run such as this.

As to other things…. Some Wise Old Curmudgeon (A$$hoe) named Bone once put forth the proposition that:

“There is a very fine line between Isolation and Solitude and if you’re not living on that edge, you’re taking up too much space.”

Take good care of that. Sounds like the fitness thing is working out very well. Keep that brain limber too. 😉
