Ask Himself

I don’t know why random people tell me things, or ask my advice.

Must be that grandfatherly countenance.

Years ago, when I lived in Plano, I was on a walk around the neighborhood and as I passed by a mini strip mall, a kid asked if I would buy him e-cigs at the beer and wine there.

My response? “As if you don’t look [like a simp] enough already”

I was on a run last week and was stopped by a young black guy, who wanted to ask me a question. Now, I’m not in Dallas. I’m in the country. So I stopped and listened. Why not?

“Is it gay for a woman to touch your baby-mama ‘inappropriately’?

Ok. I’m invested now and want details. But he wouldn’t only say, and told me that baby mamma said it wasn’t gay and guys would be OK with it anyhow. He said although he was 21 (with a baby mama?), he was more traditional and it wasn’t OK with him.

So I told him: Unless it’s a medical thing, it’s absolutely gay, since the purpose would be to start something. Any guy would say that, and guys wouldn’t care but would be titillated. But generally not if it were the mother of his child.

Satisfied with my answer, he thanked me and we went on our separate ways. Me to continue my run, him to pace around the middle of a neighborhood intersection talking loudly on his mobile.

Happy to help, I was.

  1. For many of us, with age comes wisdom. For many others, with age comes a wizened appearance. Either way, oft times it causes some to seek guidance.

Thankfully, those of us in the former can use it as a force for good.

In 1985 when I first “came around” I met a fellow by the name of Jack McSherry. The man was grizzled, wizened and at the time celebrating FORTY YEARS. He knew Bill Wilson personally… and got sober in 1945. NINETEEN. FORTY. FIVE.

Back in 85 folks that “long in the tooth” were a true rarity… so as someone quite literally “wet behind the ears”, I asked him “Jack, how did you do it?”

His simple yet brazenly insightful pearl of wisdom conveyed with a twinkle in his eye: “Stick around kid.”

I reserve the right to quote Old Jack with a deep fondness, reverence and come July, the same depth of wisdom he achieved.
