Last week I was up in Virginia galavanting around. So, very little exercise. This week I’m back at it.
Monday was super painful. I had a decent bike ride, making sure to take it easy. But later on when it was time to hit the weights, I suffered. I was sore before I even finished. This got worse as the evening wore on. Still, with a little Tylenol and sleep, I was right as rain the next day.
That day was a running day. Seemed tough, but not too bad. Until evening, when the soreness was nearly unbearable. No Tylenol, but sleep fixed it. Next two days were better. Matter of fact, running Thursday wasn’t bad. The weather report was telling me rain was coming, so in the morning I mowed, then ran. I reasoned that I couldn’t mow in the rain, but I could run in it.
It was cool and rainy, so I’m sure I had a great mile time. Didn’t wear the iWatch, so I don’t know. Got wet as hell, but I didn’t start stiffening up until dinner and even then, it was no big deal. It’s slated to rain all day today so a makeup ride that I’d have (It rained Wednesday, so no ride) ain’t gonna happen. My old ass isn’t getting on wet streets and a wet trail with slippery pollen pods all over. That’s a recipe for disaster. I wiped out a couple years ago on some wet leaves and by the amount of pain and how long it lasted, I think I broke or re-broke some ribs. No idea. It came up on a scan after. there were two broken/self set ribs on the report.
This is the thing growing older. You lose it so fast. What a bummer that you can’t take a week off and return back to where you were. Getting back is super painful. I guess it’s a blessing that even though getting back into the groove had a high suck factor, recovery was really quick. Back when I was out of shape, I’d be sore all week.
One nice benefit to being in shape is the ability to go to a store and find clothing in my size. I hit Boot Town to get some goin-to-town jeans. My day to day pairs are Sam’s Club. Fuggit. They fit and look OK. All my others are too baggy. I don’t wear jeans in the heat, but I will wear them if I go out after dark. I picked up some really sharp Ariat jeans. I like them so much I may buy another pair.
They are pricey. But I’m working on my summer look. I need decent polos that fit better, and a few short sleeve button downs. There’s a balance to looking sharp and being comfortable in the heat. A lot of my summer shirts are 2XL and I’m nowhere near that any longer. It takes a bit to realize that. They fit, but are loose. The salesguy at Men’s Warehouse put it best; “It’s because your head is still in fat guy mode”. I’ll budget some dough to up my game. I need shorts for sure. I think I have only one pair of cargo shorts that don’t have the pocket worn from my knife’s clip. I haven’t seen any shorts so far that aren’t cargo shorts that I’d wear. Most I’ve seen look to preppy or effeminate.
Since I’ve been divorced, I have a whole new outlook on fashion. I guess it was because you don’t care at some point. The wife is fine with you looking unattractive to others. I got fixed of that fast. The Girl wouldn’t have it and would buy me clothes. Didn’t want to be seen with a baggy pantsed old fart.
Shaved the beard. I haven’t had a clean face in years. Feels weird. I’m still getting used to the look. We’ll see if it sticks more than a month. I can grow it back in a month or so. So it’s low risk.
