Boot Update

When I walk the dogs, or do any walking, in the cool air, I prefer boots. Matter of fact, I’ll wear boots most of the year, except when it’s hot. I had a pair of Irish Setter work boots that I loved, that they no longer make.

These are 83603 work boots. I prefer the flat soles. Easier to scrape mud and dogshit off.

I replaced these with Timberlands. Which lasted about half as long.

At the time, I decided to decide how to replace them when it got cold again. The Irish Setter Ely comes closest. I, Iike an idiot, bought 1/2 size larger. I fit, but I need thicker socks. They are heavy and clunky, and clearly no good for walking. So they became my garage boots. Ones I use farting around the yard.

In the end, I bought Timberland Flumes again.

They were $120 or so. This time, I was smart. The last pair ran small, so I bought these 1/2 size above. Probably that was the logic I used, wrongly, on the Irish Setters. I’ve had these a year an a half so far. They aren’t wearing any better, and I’m sure they’ll be done this time next year. But, they are stupid comfortable, light, and have great support. Hard to beat. I like them so much, six months later, I bought a pair in black:

They are also waterproof and warm, which has been a big deal this winter. I figure swapping between the two, they’ll both last longer. So far, that’s sort of the case. To be fair to Timberland here, These boots walk 10-12 miles a week, mostly on the street. I’m sure if I used them strictly for woods they’d be fine.

So, a big thumbs up for these boots:

In the end, I wound up buying another pair of Irish Setters, so I can use the Timberlands for walking and hiking only.

These ones are the proper size. When I first put them on, they were stiff and clunky, but started breaking in by the end of the day.

None of these boots are really motorcycle friendly. At least not for my bike. I can get by with the Timberlands, but I prefer a flat sole for riding.

  1. I have a pair of “BOOTS – COMBAT, JUNGLE” that I procured from a Military Surplus in Portland, PA in 1998. Still kicking. A pair of Smith’s that I’ve had since 2001 and another pair of H&H equally as old. They don’t see much “foot” time here in SW FL… but they all still take a nice spit shine and are comfy as old friends sitting around a campfire.

On that note, I’ve had to “Retire” a couple of pair of Dingo’s that just could not be re-soled or heeled any more. I almost felt the need to hold a funeral for them.

Funny that… how Men deal w footwear vs. how the Ladies do and I won’t EVEN begin to ponder THAT logic… not that it even IS logic. 😉
