Getting Fit

It was tough getting back into it, after a week off traveling last month or so. But back to it I got.

For the most part, it didn’t take much to get back into the swing of things. But the last week or so my lungs are unhappy. Allergies and air quality are bad this spring and as I age it bothers me more and more. Weird though, my lungs are complaining, my BP reads high but after I bike or run, I breathe better (exercising doesn’t bother me) and my blood pressure goes back to the lower end of normal. Puzzling.

As I write this it’s spiking. Why? Caffeine? I had more today than usual. Is it the white tea? It seems to do this after I drink that. Supplements? It’s easy enough to test. I guess I’ll go no caffeine again and see. During lent I stopped for the most part. Now, I notice I tolerate it less. It seems diet related. When I get up in the morning, it’s normal. As I sit and watch YouTubes at night, it’s low. Seems to spike after breakfast.

Could be a friend of mine is dealing with misery like I had three years ago and I spent the morning obsessing, picking at that scar.

Good thing is that my weight clocked in at 194, a surprise. That’s nearly 10 lbs off my high/normal weight that I’ve had all year. I think it’s because that since the Girl is gone, it’s very rare I eat a restaurant meal, where I used to eat 2-3X over the weekend. Tells you how fattening that food is, even if you are trying to eat healthy. Also, no Girl’s cooking. She’s an OK cook. But her ingredient choice is sub-optimal for me. You simply don’t need rice, beans, tortillas, and potatoes at a meal. Any given meal that I’d make myself would have only one of those, maybe. I generally limit my high glycemic carb intake to one portion per meal.

Still, I’ll take the W here.

I’ve been toughening my hide, now that the hot weather is here. What I do is sunbathe – back and front, 15 minutes a side during weekdays. What this is doing is tanning up my face, arms, and legs so that when I find myself outside for more than a few minutes, I don’t get burned. I started this a few years ago and it’s mostly worked. Do I care that it wrinkles my skin more? No. I’m old. I’m already a mess. Sunlight is healthy. Just don’t over do it.

Last year or so, I can’t remember, I replaced my glasses that were jettisoned off the bike and bought a pair of Ray-Ban frames that were like my computer glasses. Round, preppy looking. Seemed like a good idea, until I started wearing them. I also needed my Ray-Ban shades, the ones I run and bike with, updated. So this time, I went for the progressive bi-focals:

What a weird view. Makes my eyebrows look out of control (which they kind of get). They actually fit my head better and are really light.

I got a pair when they first came out and couldn’t get used to them whatsoever. May have been that I bought them at Sam’s. I couldn’t get used to the altered perspective. Things move weird, and at the time I had a much faster bike. I had them on riding it and things were moving differently in my field of view, throwing me off and making me feel that this was really, really dangerous.

These ones are way better. But, you have to get used to the smaller field of ‘focused’ view. Also, you have to unfocus when moving your head. I looked left to right before backing up my truck and the hood waved like it was water. This is probably from looking out the right side of the lenses, which are tuned for peripheral vision, not forward focused. Reading with them takes some getting used to. They are better if I happen to be browsing on my iPad though.

I’ve used them on the bike. They were OK. But I think I need to get a normal pair – non bifocal, like I have with a the pair of shades I used while riding. I’ve been squabbling with the useless FSA. But now that it’s clear, no better way to burn it up than get another pair of specs.

This week, I’m off tea and my supplements. We’ll see where that goes.
