Lot of armchair lawyer and bug eyed spasmodic loony opinion is floating on the interwebs about the Pretti fiasco up in Minneapolis. No one, but no one, waits for the real story to come out.

I was out walking the pups when it hit my head – Hold up…this is Minneapolis, a blue city. What was this dude doing packing heat? Do they even issue permits? If he had a permit, he sure as hell shouldn’t have been where he was, armed.

I was getting my morning caffeine and surfing the news and found this fisking at Mad Medic that answered that question:

The issue was not that Pretti had a concealed weapon, though he did not reportedly have his concealed weapon’s permit or ID on him at the time of his death, which is a crime in Minnesota.

The issue was that Pretti decided to get entangled with officers while carrying the weapon, which led to confusion, which led to officers perceiving a threat. At the time of his death, federal agents were warning nearby protesters to back up or be arrested for interfering with their operation…

If you take a concealed carry class, a good instructor will outline how to deal with law enforcement. If detained, you should inform them immediately that you have a lawful weapon. You should certainly not, under any circumstances, get hostile with officers who are authorized to use lethal force under the law.

(You should also, as a general rule, avoid stupid places at stupid times with stupid people doing stupid things.)

Pretti did not follow any of this advice. Instead, while armed, he stepped between federal agents and a woman who was ignoring repeated commands from an officer

So, he was doing something stupid that he would’ve been warned not to do at an LTC class. I was. That’s how I got on that train of thought.

For any encounter with the law, you need to tell them you are a LTC holder and are packing heat. And for the sake of all that’s holy, don’t scuffle with them.

This was textbook being somewhere stupid doing stupid things.

Back in the day, when I was a field tech with a company truck, we had to sit through a talk by the insurance company about how we were expected to behave in a company vehicle. They had this great term called “Predisposition”, what they wanted us not to have, or a state to find ourselves in.

He asked a question – You’re at a traffic light on a six lane street. You’re in the middle lane, there’s a truck in the right lane and a car in the left. Light turns green, you go into the intersection and get hit by a dude running the light to the right. Was it your fault? No. Could you have prevented it? Yes, by waiting for the truck to move before you move, since he could see to the right, and you couldn’t.

You predisposed yourself to having an accident. Be more careful.

Here’s a better one, where a skier got mauled by a snow leopard:

Did she deserve to have her face eaten by a snow leopard for skiing? No.

Did she deserve to have her face eaten by a snow leopard for wanting to take a picture? No.

She was in the leopard’s realm and didn’t understand what that meant. Estupido. She got well within pouncing distance of an apex predator and it mauled her. Guaranteed it didn’t know or care anything about her.

How about our hero up in Minneapolis?

Did he deserve to be shot for protesting? No.

Did he deserve to be shot for ‘observing’ No.

He ignored his carry training, and put his armed self inbetween doofus women not complying and the law enforcement officers. He did this without telling them he’s armed while in their realm, as I explored here.

He put himself in that position. Why? For some immigrant criminal. That’s who they were collecting, a wife beating illegal, from what I understand.

Also, a useful idiot prop, if what I understand is going on here, especially from the Signal chatter.

A life wasted for nothing. One of these bozos is sure to be next.
