Getting Fit

Another month, another weigh in.

Same as always. I’ve been hovering at 200 for months now. I’m thinking the bulk of it is in my legs and shoulders. Now that it’s cold, I’ve been wearing jeans. The same jeans that were loose on me at 185 fit the same at 200.

I’d lean up if I had some more discipline. I’ve had to go to more than one meeting last month held at a restaurant. So, what the hell, I’ll order dinner. Or on the odd weekend we’re out at the girl wants to share desert – well, ok. That said, the holidays are approaching fast, so I need to be super diligent this month. Last few years Thanksgiving and Christmas haven’t been big pig-outs. this year should be no different. The bulk of fitness is diet. You can spend an hour on an elliptical, and absolutely blow that effort by eating a big grab bag of chips.

Riding on Friday, and this months weightlifting increase have me feeling that I’m adding more muscle. I can feel it, and I can see it in the mirror. Every added effort appears to have results.

May be the supplements.

Filthie had a post about them the other day.

Let’s start with Vitamin D. I get a lot of it. I’m outside every day. I walk the dogs, run & bike. Two hours a day in the sun, minimum.

Other than that I take these:

I take a 50+ vitamin every day, as well as the turkesterone/tongat ali supplement. It seems to work, since I’m a geezer that’s putting on muscle, and have noticed improvements in…uh…other areas. Next endocrinologist appointment, I’ll them measure my t-levels. I’m curious, since I workout a bunch and take the supplements, to see where I’m at. They stopped testing that years ago because I recovered a decent level organically.

I’ll use the sleep aid from time to time, but I found it’s no better than plain magnesium 500mg tabs. Honestly, by curbing tea/coffee/caffeine in the morning, I need no aids to get to sleep and normally, I get up only once.

Reducing my morning tea intake, and drinking nothing but water or lemon ginger tea in the afternoon has done an enormous amount of good.

You know, if a nearly 63 year old geezer can get and keep fit, anyone can.

  1. Just a couple of notes from someone older and pretty well trained in human physiology and biochemistry…

Regarding Vit D, I am assuming that you live in the states….. Between September 15 and March 15 of the year, you are getting minimal Vit D production no matter how long you are in sunlight. The activating part of the light spectrum responsible for Vit D production is UV-B. This range of wavelengths is screened out in the atmosphere once the sun angle declines going into winter.

I see the “1 a Day” multi. That is a hard-pressed tablet. Once past the age of 25-30, the human body is largely incapable of breaking down these things. (Talk to any sewage water plant worker who has experience with sludge management.) So, you do not get the components in bio-available format.

I have been supplementing for about 45 years. For a long-time, I was using Neo-Life (gel/liquid capsules) and, honestly, I do not remember why I quit. But, anyway, I moved to using Spectro (powder in capsules) from Solaray for decades now without complaint. I am sure that there are other great products out there but research and trialing on them is up to you. (I use specialty products from Nature’s Harvest, Jarrow and NOW brands as well – – also without complaint.)

At age 71, I have seen a doctor maybe three times in 40 years despite crappy genes and a couple of bad habits.

YMMV, just trying to be helpful.
