I listen to Adam Carolla podcasts while working out. Dude’s pretty funny, and he generally has interesting guests. I’ll listen to Rogan too, but he has a penchant for drifting off into the weeds with some of his guests, especially about Area 51 silliness.
But Carolla will get stuck on something and he’ll bring it up again and again. Sometimes, it’s stupid. He’s been stuck on that Indian truck driver that banged an illegal U-turn for sometime. More specifically, about the van that hit him. His contention is that the van driver, who turns out to be a Haitian immigrant (don’t know if all in the van were legal).
As a Texas CDL holder, Let’s start with the driver:
- You can’t bang a u-turn on a divided highway.
- You can’t U-turn, or use the pass-thru marked ‘Authorized Use Only’
- You can’t U-turn from the right-hand lane.
- When you do that crap, and kill a vanload of people, Haitian or not, it’s typical to show some recognition, even remorse, for what you did.
Far as the van driver goes, Carolla is stuck wondering how the van driver didn’t see what was happening and hit the brakes. Let’s start:
- Reaction time – You have to add some for a WTF moment caused by a truck driver doing something that spectacularly stupid and reckless. 3 seconds?
- If he were going 75 or so, and I’m guessing that being a Haitian immigrant, I’m guessing way faster – that’s 110 ft/sec. I didn’t get a 3 second count from the u-turn to the hit. You have hundreds of feet before you can react, let alone hit the brakes and stop.
- I’m guessing the van driver wasn’t paying attention either. They aren’t known to be the best drivers in the world.
That said, There’s little the van driver could’ve done.
He shouldn’t have had to do anything. Carolla misses that point.
And I hate, hate, hate how these people – the Indians, clan up.
We, the undersigned, urge Governor Ron DeSantis and the Florida Board of Executive Clemency to re-examine and reduce the sentence for a 28-year-old truck driver involved in a fatal U-turn crash on Florida’s Turnpike in South Florida. This was a tragic accident — not a deliberate act. While accountability matters, the severity of the charges against him does not align with the circumstances of the incident.
Key Considerations & Precedent:
No criminal intent or history: The incident was a catastrophe, not a criminal act. The driver has no prior record and fully cooperated with authorities.Petition Requests:
Consider alternative sentencing options, such as restorative justice measures, counseling, or community service, aligning with both accountability and compassion. Conclusion:
By granting clemency, you would reaffirm the value of proportional justice, the power of community advocacy, and the potential for rehabilitation. We believe this case is not just about one individual—it speaks to the broader principles of fairness and mercy in the justice system. With deep respect and hope,

No.
He needs to fry.
You can’t excuse murder by incompetence and neglect.
He needs to do time, even if it’s an example to others not to do what he did.
And I’ll bet that video of this wreck will appear in CDL training courses everywhere, as what not to do.
I remember a course I had to take for the Region 10 schools (to drive a bus for the Church. They followed Plano ISD’s training requirements). They had an example of an old dude that (I think) called in sick, or wasn’t feeling well and got a call to replace a driver for a football game. He had a gut-full of cold medicine, didn’t do a decent pre-trip inspection, got distracted, and missed a bubble on his front tire, which blew out causing the bus to go into a ditch and roll, injuring many football players.
They used actors to portray an actual event. Dude went to jail.
Dude here needs to do some time, get kicked out, and banned. And the feds need to clamp down hard on CDLs. I can see where states will detain a driver and impound a truck if the driver is foreign and holding a California or other sanctuary state CDL.
