Getting Fit

Getting old sucks.

I screwed up my left calf, I think by over stressing it. So I took a week to heal, only bike riding. No weights, no running.

This was the week to get back into it. It’s stunning how fast you lose it when you don’t use it. Lifting was tough. Running was tough. I only ran about 2/3 my normal distance, figuring that it would be wise to pack it in when the calf felt like it had enough. The only thing that was a joy was riding the bike. Probably because I never stopped that. As a matter of fact, I added Friday as a biking day.

I think that’s going to be a thing, as well as doing some trail riding. For that, I treated myself to one of these:

I originally was going to get a Polygon. But my current bike is a Specialized, and it’s been a great unit. I’m stoked for the fall.

I’ve also upgraded my garage gym:

The big improvement is the speakers, tied to a meaty Bluetooth amp. I was carrying my Bose Bluetooth speaker in when I lifted. It’s nice to have tunes built in once again. That, along with a general cleaning up of the pigsty that was there has made life awesome.

Far as weight goes, I’m hovering in the 198-201 range, for months. I think a bit of this from my low of 185 is muscle mass, since my shoulders, arms, and legs are way more muscular. That said, I think there’s a diet component as well. One that creeps up when you get fit:

“Keep fries as the side?” – Sure. Why not?

“Let’s get pie” – Ok. Why not?

“Want ice cream” – why yes, yes I do.

I won’t get into the carb load in the typical Mexican meal – Tortillas, rice, beans, chips. No bueno.

Add to that I’d generally celebrate Fridays by a burger and onion rings. I also keep fruit around, like bananas and oranges for afternoon snacks when I’m dragging.

I need to tighten up the diet and see where it heads.
