In Greek mythology, Aergia is the personification of sloth, idleness, indolence and laziness.
I was looking to see if there were a god of procrastination.
Must be me.
Not long after I bought the truck (I’ve owned it two years), it would have periods where it wouldn’t crank. I’d have to jam the shifter deeper into park and it would light off. Must be a neutral safety switch. For those uninitiated, this switch prevents you from cranking the motor if it’s in gear (like Drive or Reverse). So I picked on up from RockAuto, figuring if it shit out on me, I’d crawl under the rig and change it. I put it in the truck next to the tools and first aid kit.
The worse it got, I’d say to myself, I gotta get to that this weekend.
I had a convergence of it going even worse and me with a week off, so the other day gave the truck some love, did some cleaning and maintenance, and swapped the switch.
On this truck, it’s a module held on my two bolts on the driver side of the transmission. You don’t even need to lift it, there’s room enough to scoot under. Seems to me, down there with the water, ice, and slush is a stupid place for such a thing. But it’s what it is.
The shaft was rusted, of course, since it’s built out of good old American pig-iron:

It was tough to get off. So that shaft would need some shining up to get the new one on. I tried twice to get it clean enough to install. Finally, it slid on properly:

Climbed up in the cab, hit the key, and it fired right up. The shift lever even feels tighter.
And, it hasn’t had a no-crank episode since.
Another job that was relatively cheap and easy to fix that I waited months (probably more than a year) to get around to doing, suffering the whole time.
I’m really my worst enemy when it comes to this stuff.
And all that time you were waiting… well… “rust never sleeps” so yeah there you go. The more you put it off, the more it rust-O-welded itself in place.
How many times have you been to a meeting and heard your story? I just read mine. Again.
Still… Sloth is one of the deadly seven and Procrastination is one of it’s minions and it’s one of those “defects of character” that I plan on rectifying.
Maybe next week.
🙂
Still, there is nothing nearly as satisfying as putting an annoyance like that to rest. Well DONE.
