I’ve spent all week screwing with my new work laptop.
Most of my frustration is based on company policies and a feckless Helpdesk. It was supposed to automatically restore based on the backup from my old laptop.
It did.
They put a ‘restored files’ folder on my desktop. I didn’t have delete permissions. So all I could do was copy. But the hard drive is 1/2 the size. No room. I found I could move, but the permissions followed. When the Helpdesk finally contacted me, I just wanted the folder gone. But, all the permissions were jacked on the stuff I moved, so the dude would have to go folder by folder, file by file and fix them. So we wiped it all out, set the restore to start, and I booked for the weekend.
It restored a few files. Put two folders I’m stuck with on the desktop. I copied my crap to a big thumb drive and restored it myself. I had a backup on a USB HDD, but apparently that is not allowed. Good. Great. Grand. Wonderful.
The upshot of this is that I’ve been using Winders 11 all week with it. Hate it.
I had the new laptop maybe a week, got over my sticker shock, and promptly bought a MacBook Air. Behold:

I had a Mac Mini a decade ago or so. Maybe more. I spent hours in Apple stores playing with them while I was traveling. At one point, a sales guy came up. I told him I was thinking of going to the dark side. Without missing a beat, he said “We prefer to call it ‘walking towards the light'”. So I’m used to Mac. Hell, I have an iPad and iPhone, why not? Got the cool mouse as well.
Physically, their build quality is astounding. It’s solid and nice. Like driving a Lexus, compared to the Corporate Dell I have.
So far, I love the thing. This leaves me with two Linux laptops to unload, an HP and a Thinkpad. Maybe I cut loose one.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I feel the urge to put on a fedora and go sit in Starbucks.
“Now, if you’ll excuse me, I feel the urge to put on a fedora and go sit in Starbucks.”
That right there… is going to have me chuckling all day.

As one of those “IT Guys” I can say I completely understand your Win 11 frustrations… But working here in Texas higher ed, we’re fairly limited on what we can support. The Macs are individually great machines, so long as you are OK with the limitations of course. Managing them in groups is terrible, and of course there is the expense… How are you finding the performance of your new machine? Some of our “more graphics heavy” users are finding the new Apple chips do not perform up to the hype levels and have switched out to PC laptops for their work… Me, I use a tablet (Surface) because I spend my day in a lot of meetings and this does what I need as I am not longer doing IT work, just talking about it these days…

It performs like a supercar. I splurged and bought new. Didn’t scrimp on the power.
