IPhones have great cameras these days. But I find that when I want to catch a good shot, I run into their limitations. For instance, if you zoom in, the resolution suffers. This is sort of a big deal, since when I try to take images of the dogs, or even birds around here, they flitter off or move. This is especially true with the dogs. When they see me moving in, they change what they are doing and start paying attention to me.
I’d been looking for a DLSR, but sticker shock drove me away.
Until I read a post at The View from the Porch. Just a small link to a great site – UsedPhotoPro.com. Used pro gear. Nothing I like better than high quality used stuff. I’ll happily buy a used high end item, rather than a cheap version. Cheapie versions usually are punishing. For instance, it’s why I’d buy a used Lexus long before I bought a new KIA. I can score a 15 year old LS for half the price, or less, than the cheapest KIA.
So look what I found:

That there is a Nikon D5000. It came with the lense on the left for $140 or so. I ended up going back and getting a telephoto for another $45 or so. So, less than $200, I’m into a decent DLSR.
It was in far better shape than I expected, and works well:

I’m still getting used to it. Took a minute to figure out how to have it not timestamp my image.
Just what I need, huh? another hobby.
BRAVO! BRAVO! BRAVISSIMO!!!! Phones are fine for “snapshots”, convenient for a quick video, etc. EVIDENCE collection, etc.
You want to capture a PHOTOGRAPH? Get a Bone-afide (Digital or otherwise) SINGLE LENS REFLEX CAMERA.
Learn about how aperture affects depth of field and shutter speeds, etc. Proper portraiture and where you should focus (just under the subjects eye actually) ALL that good stuff.
Another hobby indeed but one that’s very enjoyable and gratifying.
Our expectations now will be postings entitle “Gratuitous Dog PORTRAITS”.
And I for one can’t WAIT!!!! 🙂
Good onya man!!! Oh… and yeah, hard drive space can vanish once you really get rolling. Just a heads up.
