Aww….Hell no..

This hit my inbox:

I noticed this pop up on my office laptop as I was working. A dopy copilot icon following my mouse to each paragraph. Fuck me. Now I need to start searching how to shut this shit off.

I’m an adult. I know how to use the app. I know how to write and what I want to say.

Add this to the earlier mail I got about my fairly new PC not being compatible with Windows 11, as if I wanted it anyway.

I don’t want a subscription to my OS.

I don’t want a subscription office package any more.

I was thinking of a Mac, but it looks like they got the same disease.

No Me Gusta. Don’t want it.

I have a 1T SSD drive in my stash of goodies. I think it’s time to crack the case on this bitch and install a third drive with Linux and make this thing dual boot. I’ll go back to windows if I need to, but I think I’m done.

  1. I left Windows many releases ago and went to Linux. Currently using Zorin OS on a System 76 laptop. There are problems with not every application is available for Linux but usually there is a work around.

Go for it and good luck.

  2. Oh Gawd no….. Is THAT the direction? SUBSCRIPTION OS???? And yeah, I would be shutting down that Copilot crap inna heartbeat.

I’ve gotten two _welcome_ screens alluding to how I should be “Preparing for the end of Windows 10 Support”…

You mean you’re going to be (and have already been) doing your BEST to utterly BRICK (OK, I agree it’s AGES beyond it’s service life) my Refurbished $79 Tiger Direct Desktop (that GROANED horribly in protest when it “Transitioned” from Windows 7 to 10) I bought ten years ago? HOW DARE YOU. 😉

I JUST bought Herself a new Laptop for Christmas that has “Eleven” on it. Thus far she has not mentioned about anything intrusive as you’ve described. I’ll have to advise her to be vigilant.

I for one am utterly and totally FED UP with the Technology. And I’m wondering if I’m not beginning to become that “Old Man Yells At Cloud” at times… but FFS… the other day I’m driving HER farking car through Tampa… I’m not familiar w the area and the last thing I need is for the CAR to start TALKING… it was a distraction… for what?

It was telling me… that “there is a camera head on the traffic light”… It also rats on me if I exceed local speed limits by a certain amount (SHE gets both a TEXT and EMAIL saying WHERE and WHEN. Only a matter of time before THAT notification gets sent to the Constabulary of the Jurisdiction of the “Offense” I imagine.

OR… if the WINDOW is open… or if the DOOR is unlocked… and BOTH of THOSE reports have been INACCURATE on a NUMBER of occaisions.

MY car… has gone rogue with a “Check Forward Collision Avoidance System” warning. OK. HOW?

A system I neither care about nor really need or want… now has disabled other features that are / were quite convenient.

    _SIGH_

OK, rant over. I feel your angst and commiserate entirely. Sounds like you have a working solution. I have no need to really have to go to that length as none of my home machines are “working”… aside from and ANCIENT “XP” machine that has my outright-owned copy of AutoCAD LT on it. They no longer support migration… so I keep that until it implodes. And the consulting gig is done so….

Hang in there. LOL… I’m going to have to see what the rumpus is on the old “Windows SUCKS” Facebook group.. I would bet the chatter is LOUD this week.

    1. I have a buddy that’s a car dealer. He’ll lend me wheels when my truck is being fixed. He promised to get the complicated rearviews fixed when I bought my sequoia from him. So I dropped it at a shop and picked up a Buick as a loaner. I’m driving down the road cackling at the long, horizontal speedo and the chrome plastic window controls (right out of the 80’s), when the thing lights off BEEPBEEPBEEPBEEP.

Collision avoidance. It didn’t like how I was driving. Bad thing is, It took my attention off the road as I looked down to find out WTF was making that racket. Damn near made me have a wreck by warning me I was going to wreck.

I’ve been toying with the idea of supplementing my 2000 Excursion with another car. N+1 here. I was looking at beaters in the $3k range, but I may up my game and go for something better. My heart is telling me a Golf, Jetta, or CC by VW, as well as a Porsche Cayenne. I’ve seen decent deals on them. But my head is telling me 2008-2015 Lexus. Something I have a skillset with. Although, I have run into a few deals on 98-2005(?) Mercury Marquis medicare sleds. Gramps car, low mileage.

  3. My 2 year old work laptop has Office 2016 apps on it, though I think our email now goes through some kind of 365 blender before it hits Outlook on my pc.

I bought a 15 in. 2024 Macbook Air to replace a 13 in.2013 Macbook Pro. No AI on it. Pretty sure it will last another 10+ years like the one before, whose screen is just too small for me to see well now. Yeah, I paid the apple tax but windows is just too shitty to put up with. Running linux on my daily driver desktop for home use. Does what I want.
