Let Papa Fix it, Dishwasher Edition

Moving into a rental is always fun. And even though the one I have is better than most I’ve seen, I’ve been fixing little things right and left. Starting with the dishwasher. That one, I didn’t even need to try to see that I needed to clean it up. Did you know you had to do this?

These people don’t seem to think so:

Sure. Just scrape your greasy shit off and stuff it in the washer.

I think one of these was the previous tenant.

I could see when I opened it up that the top filter was gooped up, and bet that the filter was as well.

The main drain filter is that circle under the sprayer. That was gross enough. The filter itself is that smaller circle with the dome in it. It comes out.

That was probably the third pass to scrub off the clogged up grease.

It’s a simple task that is made easier if you scrape the dishes, and wipe or rinse off the food first. Sure I shouldn’t have to do that, but I want the washer to concentrate on cleaning. I don’t need it to handle grease or food. Grease shouldn’t be anywhere near your drains anyhow. This filter came out with a simple twist and pull. Clean down the drain if you can as well.

And unlike these fools on the vidya, I never put my pots and pans in the dishwasher. That’s a rezibe for having foods stick, and will flat out ruin cast iron.

BTW – Kim Du Toit had a lamentation about dishwashers the other day. Among the comments was some good advice – run the hot water in the sink until it’s hot before firing up the dishwasher. In this house, it takes a good minute for the kitchen sink to produce hot water. So that’s a great chunk of advice. Explains the greasyness of the dishwasher.

  1. You may want to check the airflow across the condenser on your refrigerator too. Usually located behind a vented panel at the bottom back of the fridge… I check and clean ( small compressed air can or vacuum) mine about once a year. It should extend the life of the fridge.
