Here We Go Again

Now that the conventions are over, the bands and singers are kvetching that their music was used over the sound systems. Seems ok when democrats do it. Republicans? Notsomuch. They weren’t asked, so a hissy is in order.

The latest few are Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters and Beyonce.

It’s the same thing every time. “YOU CAN’T USE MY MUSIC IN YOUR EVIL APPEARANCES”

Yes. They can.

I used to be in the sound system business. Did you know you can’t just play any music, like in your store or restaurant? From what I recall, it was one speaker mono, two stereo. Anything else was considered a performance, and royalties had to be paid. This is how our sales guy would get customers to signup. He’d be at a place and see they were ‘out of compliance’, he’d offer a deal. If it didn’t work, he’d fink them out to the publishing houses, BMI and ASCAP. Then they’d be back for the deal, and I’d be out to install the music service.

But it works the other way as well. Pay the royalties, you can play the music wherever you want. So these douchy performers can’t say shit about where their songs are played. They took the money and gave permission when they licensed their tunes, and it turns out the republicans know this. I’m sure all of the producers of live events of any kind know this, because it’s a royal pain in the ass if you are caught. Ever wonder why when you are at a live venue, before the live part the music over the system is typically nobodies? That would be why.

So Grohl says he’d sue. But Trump paid the license service.

Tough shit. You took the ticket. He says he’ll take the royalties and donate them to Harris. Whoa, big spender! What’s that? $5? I’m sure it isn’t much. They make money on consistent play, not single plays.

This kind of petty bullshit changes the way I listen to music. I’ll hear the tunes of these hypocrites, and I’ll hit the next button. Something about a silly tantrum turns me off.

FWIW, I didn’t watch any of the conventions, although I’ve seen highlights.

One thing struck me from that I saw of the DNC one. They create bullshit out of nothing, spew it out, and the audience looks on in nearly rapture. You had Michelle Obama up there moaning about god knows what, discrimination no doubt. A woman that grew up middle class, wafted up on the warm thermals of affirmative action, and is now wealthy. Oprah? The only discrimination I’ve heard about was a clerk in a Swiss boutique not wanting to hand her a super expensive Gucci bag. Oh, the humanity! Keep in mind this woman was a multi-millionaire by age 30, and is now a billionaire, with a capital B.

All the time, the crowed looked on adoringly, nodding.

That was the scary part.
