Got My Work Cut Out

Looky what I gots:

That there is a new strat body, and a P-bass. I really wanted to make the bass, but I have strat parts, and need to fix the other one I built. I converted it to a hardtail, and kind of screwed it up. Turns out the roller bridge I used is too wide. So I have to move the rollers in and around to make it work.

I thought I ordered a hardtail body. But, meh…I’ll install a tremolo. I used one from a Squire last time. Probably why it sucked.

These two are really nice. There’s so much work to find wood, shape a guitar, then get the neck right. I was thinking of buying a neck-thru neck, but these were half that price. It’s simply cheaper to get one that was milled on a CNC and concentrate your energies on finish and electronics.

The last one I built, I used tung oil. I think it’ll be lacquer on both. The strat has amazing grain. So I think I’ll start with black stain. Let it soak into the grain before I start standing. That’ll bring it out so that it pops under lacquer. I have black, red, brown, and blue dyes. It’ll look badass in a dark blue with black grain. I’ll have to experiment.

The bass has much finer grain. Nothing special. I could do a flame maple veneer on the top. Maybe a silver-burst dark blue, red, or black. I’ve done a sunburst in maroon that was cool.

Then again, the strat is really pretty. Maybe I simply clearcoat it, and do the crazy grain thing on the bass. The pickguard on the donor strat is mother-of-pearl, so clearcoat may be all it needs.

All I need for the strat is a decent trem bridge. The P-bass will be Seymour Duncans, a mity mite neck, Gotoh or Grover hardware (I think). I didn’t look to see if graph-tec had a bass bridge. One thing though, it’ll be simple. Probably just a volume knob. My bass head has eq and effects.

The bass, if my finger and toes calculation is right, will be around $350 or so. Not bad for an instrument that’ll out-sing a Fender when I’m done.
