I have this thing with movies.
If I can’t believe the premise, or there’s something so wrong it borders disbelief, I’m mostly out. I’ll circle back to that.
But so it was with the newest Marvel heroine (newest? Dunno) Echo.
Jeez these heroes sprout up like daisies, don’t they? Let’s check our list:
- Stronk woman – Check.
- Of color – Check.
- Native American – Bonus points
- Handicapped, deaf and mute – oof! will it ever end?
So our heroine starts out a female John Wick. Basically a thug in the service of the yellow pinkie character in the trailer. Until she finds out he’s a bad man. There’s a lot of back stories going on. One of the funny things I found watching it is she’s supposedly Choctaw. Welp, those dudes aren’t all that far north of me in Oklahoma. But for some reason, they filmed it in Georgia. Prolly didn’t want to show the real tribal area. It’s flat as flat can be, not a lot of trees, lot of dirt, and 3.2 beer. It would make her early life seem way, way worse.
So here’s the rubs:
- As with many female super heroes, She’s very much shorter and lighter than the dudes she’s tangling with. She isn’t petite, I’m thinking in the 130-140lb range. Dudes she’s fighting are near 200 or better. That’s a huge disadvantage, martial arts or none.
- She’s deaf. She can’t hear people sneak up on her, nor would she hear any noise she’s making. That’s a big deal when you are stalking people to deliver a beating.
- That prothesis. One kick and she’s down. It got damaged in the movie, but her old uncle built one out of junk whilst hers got fixed. She limped at first with it, then it was forgotten until the refurb one showed up.
Why did I bother watching? Why do I watch any of them?
Because the girl wants to sit on the couch, relax together, and watch them. So I set aside the snark and frame my comments as questions. “I wonder how much noise she’s making. She sure doesn’t know”. That kind of thing.
It’s entertainment for her. So it is for me.
Besides, she can be as bad as me. We were watching DC’s Blue Beatle. She cracked up and busted on the characters as bad as me. Especially at the end when they showed the father in a house in heaven, and it had plastic covers on the couch.
