I have the day off, in honor of MLK. I’ll honor that by cleaning up around here and unpacking more boxes.
It’s 11 degrees outside, part of the three days of winter we’ll have this year. So it’s chilly, even inside as this dump has shitty windows and doors that don’t seal. In my haste to find someplace to live, I didn’t notice that this place is all electric. Gawd knows what my electric bill will look like this month. I took for granted that most houses in Plano of this vintage have gas heat and hot water.
What was really annoying about this cold blast was that listening to the news yesterday, you’d think that we were going to get hit shortly after noon. Reality was that it was late night before anything happened. Matter of fact, I woke up to it. I could have stayed down south longer. Matter of fact, I was starting to regret not bringing my work laptop so I could stay an extra day and maybe get stuck there. That said, fear of a busted water pipe back at the homestead had me heading home yesterday.
So I’ve been loafing around this morning, getting my wits. Aria, the wiser of the dogs is sprawled on my bed. Winston is in my office complaining that we should be walking. I’ve explained repeatedly that we’ll freeze our dicks off. But he doesn’t seem to get it. The two of them love playing in the frigid air.
I’m mostly unpacked. I have a few boxes in my office, and three or so in the bedroom. I need to spend time untangling the garage, but that will have to wait until another day.
So while I’m dragging my feet, I was surfing for a smaller car. Maybe a Jetta TDI to lower my gas bill. I can pick up one for not a lot of money. My car dealer buddy has a few Lexus’ that look nice and are priced to sell. But then maths got a hold of me as well as common sense. Just the additional insurance is more money than I spend a month on gas, forget the cost of the car.
So that’s a big nope.
I’ll spoil the beast truck instead and order some decent gas shocks for the thing. I think the front ones are wasted. Besides, I found a BMW R1200 RT that needs sizing up.
Enough farting around. On to the boxes.
My daughter is down in Brookshire. About half hour west of Houston… She has her heat CRANKED and it was 60 in the house. Not happy… 24 outside there at the time of her meteorological vituperations. I mentioned that (I sometimes check) it was 11 in Dingmans Ferry, PA where we used to reside.
It wasn’t helpful. It was 57 here. Chilly by Ft. Myers standards and downright miserable for us aulde farte arthritics STILL trying to recover from surgery.
THAT much said, I am abjectly DETERMINED to drive my sad sorry carcass to the Gentlemens’ Club this evening. Before I lose what modicum of sanity I have. Been locked down w Herself since coming home from the Hospital and it’s grinding my gears just a tad.
As to the electric bill, I abjectly REFUSE to fire up the “Central” heat here as… well, it’s ELECTRIC. Fortunately, I don’t have to worry about freezing pipes, etc. I know you won’t have to worry as to doing it often but if you’re going to be there long term, perhaps an alternative heating source might be worth researching.
Keep warm and good luck w the unpacking ALWAYS fun.
