Found on Diogene’s Middle Finger Symphony Theater:
I like Robert Cray. But this is wrong.
Only way I’ve heard this tune played was bluegrass. Behold:
It’s supposed to be a happy, triumphant song. Dude’s happy he’s free of her, so he’s hollering in song. Not a sad piece at all.
It was in the spring one sunny day
My good gal left me Lord she went awayAnd now she’s gone but I don’t worry
‘Cause I’m sitting on top of the worldShe called me up from down in El paso
Said come back, daddy, Lord I need you soAshes to ashes, dust to dust
Show me a woman a man can trustMississippi River, long, deep and wide
The woman I’m loving is on the other sideYou don’t like my peaches, don’t you shake my tree
Get out of my orchard, let my peaches beDon’t you come here running, holding out your hand
Sittin’ on top of the world
I’ll get me a woman like you got your man
In other news, the judge signed off on the divorce decree.
Now she’s gone but I don’t worry no more, ‘Cause I’m sitting on top of the world.
Indeed. Cray plays a fine mournful tune but I concur… it’s the triumphant release from bondage version for the WIN! I well recall and it’s a tad ironic, last Decree I received was actually granted on Halloween 20 years ago. Got the final copy, saw the official filing date and laughed out loud. What better day to be rid of a witch!
I didn’t have me a triumphant song to sing though…. this would have been a good one.
From where you’re perched I can only say this. Enjoy the view. 😉
