What a Waste

I was surfing YouTube the other day and happened upon Jay Leno’s Garage.

It’s really up my alley. 1/2 hour videos looking at cool cars. Perfect for when I’m eating lunch. First video I saw was this:

No idea what it costs but it’s probably stupidly expensive.

So it’s a rebuilt and improved Landrover Defender. They harvested Tesla parts and made an all electric truck. Looks cool. Beautifully done. Jay Leno chirping about how great it is the whole time.

And it’s more useless than a Nissan Leaf.

First, the price. Dunno, but the remanufactured and updated classics usually tip six figures. Second, the range – 150 miles, no shit. All about that makes it good for is tooling around the city being seen. This isn’t a vehicle you’re going to go 4 wheeling with. Think of what happens when you’re back in the woods and your battery is going. You aren’t getting out without a generator.

How do you get a generator where you are? Bring it with you?

And used Tesla parts? Wonder what the combustibility factor is. I mean, he said they were harvested from wrecked Teslas. Sure, first thing I’d want to put in a car is a lithium oxide battery that’s had an impact of sorts.

What a waste. Think about that same rebuild with a Toyota powerplant, an LS or chebbie 4.3L six, or a decent diesel, like a Mercedes. Put the guts of a Tacoma (HiLux) in it, then you’d have something.

Got me wondering.

Wouldn’t four dudes camping with this thing be a great start to a remake of Deliverance?

Hell, they would’ve gotten the Ned Beatty treatment just buying the thing.

  1. Sir, aside from the sadness factor due to the accuracy… this is about the funniest posting I’ve read in a while. The Ned Beatty line was utterly brilliant.

As to the FrankenRover build? A clear example of “Just because you CAN do a thing does not mean you SHOULD.”

And yet, there it is. Brilliantly executed… but again… I gotta wonder what the demand is for this thing?

I’ll wish these veterans all the success in their endeavors but I think they… as well as an awful lot of others in various industries…. have been mislead by certain “Marketing” paradigms of late.
