You can call me “Captain”

About a year into our marriage, Herself and I bought a boat. A 28′ SeaRay cabin cruiser. It weighed like three tons, and drafted 3.5 feet or so. Not trailerable, unless you had a dump truck to tow it. It needed a slip. So when we bought it, we quickly discovered slip rentals were by the foot. The only place affordable was on the south river, around where it joins the Chesapeake bay.

We had it two years, and unloaded it when we moved to Houston after our first was born.

One of the happiest days of my life, selling that tub.

So, I bought a boat.

Not a spendy one, either. Behold:

Actually, it’s a Kayak. All $200 worth.

I like Kayaking and meant to buy one for sometime. But whenever I’d find one, Herself would complain. When we decided to buy a set, I found one – two ocean going kayaks, on a trailer, $1200 asking price. That there was a steal. Meh. More complaints. Honestly, if the woman didn’t complain, I don’t think she’d get any exercise at all. So, another idea shelved.

These days, I have no such constraints. These things can be found new at Academy for $330 or so. This one came with the roof rack. So at a couple Benjamins, it was a steal.

Needs some cleanup though.

Homey filled in the cargo section for his dog. I’ll scrape that out and put the proper piece back in. Just from a the little I messed with it, it’ll be a gold-plated bitch to get out. For what it’s worth, that ain’t what that foam was invented to do. No idea what the purpose was. The floor under it is flat.

All I need is a paddle (the one he had is a small rubber dingy paddle), and a vest. Not a big expense. It’s far too hot to hit any of the lakes around here, so I have time.

I’ll hit it this weekend as I drain the spa. I bought a new ‘wet end’ for one of the pumps. So I’ll be doing some plumbing. One of the zones on it is weak. The motor seems OK.

The heat looks like it’s due to break next week or so. I may be out on a river sooner rather than later.

  1. You know… I procured a Future Beach sit-in fishing Yak a number of years ago. Love the thing actually. I’ve not used it in ages… life being all in the way of late… and I don’t think the shoulders are in any shape any more to load it on the roof.

But I think I may design a workaround for that as I’m long overdue. Congrats on the acquisition.

I used it a LOT up north. Here in FlawDUH, Herself (Mine Own, of course) truly chagrins that I even get NEAR the water… never mind FLOAT on it what with the Gators.

Looks like you have a bit of “attending to” but once that’s out of the way, you have a “Seaworthy Skiff” (Hat tip, the movie “Lifeboat”) on your hands!

Get a nice LIGHT paddle. That can make all the difference for sure.

    CONGRATS Cap’n!
